NiCd Battery Pack

The NiCd Battery was invented by Waldemar Jungner of Sweden back in 1899, also pronounced "nye-cad", there are two types of NiCd batteries: sealed and vented. The main advantage that NiCd batteries have over other types is that you get more charge for the weight, which in the RC hobby is a critical element, where every gram saved makes a difference.

They come in single batteries or are put together into battery backs as seen on the left, typically in RC we use 6 single batteries in a battery pack. For best performance and reliability always attach Ultra-Plugs a.k.a Deans plugs when you first get your battery.

The main advantages of NiCd batteries over other types are :

  • The are more robust, and difficult to damage. The and withstand deep discharges
  • They last longer in storage, and the same amount of care doesn't need to be taken before storage
  • NiCd have the highest energy density of all the different types, that means more energy per size and weight, because they can be made so small they are often used in mobile devices.
  • They are the perfect replacement for alkaline batteries, and due to the long life and low maintenance they are perfect for consumer products

While for the most part there really isn't much difference between NiCd and NiMH batteries, you need to make sure that that you get the right charger for your set.
